Philips Museum Showcases 75 Years of Shavers

You may be surprised to learn that not only does Philips have a museum located in the Netherlands, but they’ve also been making probably the best electric shavers for 75 years. Their latest exhibition entitled “75 years of Philips shavers”, ended at the beginning of this year. The Philips museum is located in Eindhoven, Netherlands, and has a rotating exhibition each year. The shaver exhibition showcased electric shavers from 1939 and onwards.

The exhibition contained many examples of Philips electric shavers from the past. The exhibit was also full of posters, and photographs. There were ads and advertising to have a look at. The exhibition also had film viewings, including the launch of their app game called Mission Eureka. This is an innovative and interactive game that allows you to play on the iPad. Learn and test your knowledge of over 100 years of Philips innovations.

Philips started making shavers in 1939 in the Strijp S complex in Eindhoven. The shaver was originally created by engineer Alexandre Horowitz. This set the stage for further personal grooming products, and household and medical products in the future. In the beginning, Philips management didn’t see a feature in personal grooming products, and wanted to go in a different direction. But after trying the new products for themselves they saw the light, and sales escalated. In the 1950s Philips convinced the American and European markets that these electric shavers were the wave of the future. Hence, there was explosive growth for Philips. Eventually, the electric shaver would become one of their best-selling products ever.

Since then, Philips has sold over 600 million electric shavers worldwide, and more than two billion shaver heads have been manufactured. Their production and innovation centers are in Drachten, while their marketing division remains in Amsterdam.

If you’ve ever wondered at the process for creating a new shaver, the exhibition’s prototypes may be of interest to you. There were also some rare “special editions” only offered for a limited release, and in certain regions.

Philips didn’t get ahead of the market by manufacturing a shoddy product. They have taken great care to create an attractively-designed product that’s also high-quality. They use sophisticated marketing practices. Their brand has been around for 100 years.

After viewing this exhibition you may be wondering what Philips has planned next. Is it possible to have made everything possible in an electric shaver? Apparently not. Philips’s latest shaver offering, the Shaver 9000 series was featured, allowing fans of the Philips brand to see the latest model up close and personal, before being offered on the market. The best electric shaver on the market today from Philips is the Philips Norelco 1280X/47 SensoTouch 3D.

Over the years, Philips has designed and created many great new innovations. Some of the activities and events focussed on these topics at the museum. It’ll be interesting to keep an eye on Philips’s latest electric cordless shaver products, as well as their other product lines. You can still download their app game as well, and see for yourself how they truly remain one of the top players in the electric cordless shaver market today.
